Privacy policy
Fig Tree is a journal that runs on your phone. Nothing you record or write leaves your phone. There is no Fig Tree account and no Fig Tree server, so there is nothing for us to collect, sell, or lose. This page sets out exactly what the app keeps, what touches the network, and what this website does with the email address you give it.
What the app keeps, and where
- Your entries. Recordings, transcripts, written entries, titles, tags, and the questions you ask Reflect are stored only on your phone.
- Encryption. The journal is an encrypted database (SQLCipher). Its key is created on the phone and kept in the Android keystore. Audio files are kept in the app's private storage and are protected by Android's own file-based encryption rather than by Fig Tree's.
- About you. If you fill in the optional "About you" text in Settings, it stays on the phone and is read only when Fig Tree writes your suggested questions.
- Diagnostics. The app keeps a local log of its own events, such as model loads and errors. It never contains your entries, is never sent anywhere, and you can export it yourself if you want to share it.
What uses the network
Fig Tree has no analytics, no advertising, and no crash reporting. It makes these network requests and no others:
- Model downloads. On first use, the app downloads its speech, language, and search models (about 2 GB, on Wi-Fi by default) from GitHub and Hugging Face, and checks each file against a fixed checksum. Those servers see your phone's IP address, as with any download. Nothing about you or your journal is sent.
- Gemini Nano, on supported Pixel phones. Reflect can use Gemini Nano, which runs on the phone through Google's AICore system service. AICore is part of Android, not part of Fig Tree, and it downloads its own model through Google's system services.
- Weather, only if you turn it on. If you turn on "Match the sky to the weather" in Settings, Fig Tree asks Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) for the current weather near your time zone's main city, about every three hours and only while the app is open. The request carries one coordinate rounded to one decimal place and nothing else about you. It is off by default, and when it is off no request is made. Fig Tree never asks for your location.
Permissions
Fig Tree asks for the microphone so it can record your entries, and for notifications so it can send the optional daily question. Writing works without the microphone. Notifications are created on the phone; Fig Tree does not use push notifications.
Your control
- Export everything at any time from Settings: one Markdown file per entry, your audio, and a JSON file of all data, saved where you choose.
- Deleted entries can be restored for 30 days, then they are erased.
- "Delete everything" in Settings erases the database, the audio, and the encryption key.
- Uninstalling the app removes its data from the phone.
There is no cloud backup. If you lose your phone, entries you have not exported cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
This website and the waitlist
- If you join the waitlist, we store your email address and the time you joined, and nothing else. We use it only to tell you about Fig Tree, and we will never sell or share it.
- The list is stored with Cloudflare, which hosts this site. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site. This site serves its own fonts.
- This website (not the app) can use Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are viewed, where visitors come from, and roughly where they are. It only runs if you say OK when the site asks, and it sets cookies when it does. If you say no, nothing loads. You can change your answer with "Cookies" at the bottom of any page. Google's privacy policy covers what Google does with this data.
- To be removed from the list, email hello@figtreejournal.app and we will delete your address.
Children
Fig Tree is not directed at children under 13, and this website does not knowingly collect their email addresses.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. If the app ever starts sending anything new off your phone, it will say so in the app before it does.
